Benson Motorcycle Club £85000 Charity Donations
Since 1998 the RAF Benson Motorcycle club has been hosting charity events on the airfield, these events have ranged from an 8 hour moped endurance race, through to motorcycle rider skills days for up to 150 riders.
The mopedathon’s are a purely fun event, with many teams competing in fancy dress on 50cc mopeds, these events commence with a Le Mans style start and then 8 hours of pure mayhem, with the track direction being reversed at lunch time, just to mix it up. The military and civilian teams are usually made up of a minimum of 4 members and a maximum of 8, there have been awards for the best dressed, best custom, best crash and biggest cheats. These events have proved very popular, with teams coming from as far away as RAF Lossiemouth and at its peak we were seeing 40 + teams enter. We are considering the possibility of holding one of these events later in the year. All the proceeds raised from these events is gifted to charity.
The rider skills day is predominantly aimed at any motorcyclist that has never taken part in a track day, the idea behind this is to develop safer riding in a controlled environment. The whole airfield is utilised, with observation marshals positioned around the circuit and we also utilise instructors to assist in rider improvement. The event is run in a 3-group format, which is derived from experience levels.
Each group is provided with 8x 20min sessions around the anti-clockwise 1.8km circuit.
Over the last 20 years the club has donated in excess of £85k to over 25 local charities, these recipients have ranged from Benson, Ewelme and Chalgrove Primary Schools through to the Thames Valley Air Ambulance and the Wallingford 1155. The Wallingford 1155 are a charity organisation who support local events as well as local youth clubs. They are also the team responsible for the Wallingford Annual Firework Display, Santa’s Sleigh and Bunkfest.
The RAF Benson Motorcycle Club are always looking for new members to join the club. As well as just raising funds for charities, we attend various events throughout the year from organised track days, off-road riding courses through to British Super Bike rounds and motorcycle shows.
